Hi!
I am the Director of the Alcott School in Scarsdale.  We offer a summer program for children who are 2-5 years old.  The program is a mix of indoor group time including music, visits by the Nature of Things with live animals for the children to touch and learn about, special visits such as the Norwalk Maritime Center, Karen Hall of Acting Out, etc.  The children sing in the classroom each day and paricipate in group movement and learning fingerplays.  In addition our summer curriculum is a hands on  learning experience.  The children learn about animals that live in the ocean, the rainforest, and many other topics in a developmentally appropriate way.  They participate in cooking activities and open ended art exploration in our multi-age groups.  A great deal of the day is spent in outdoor play, including daily use of the sprinklers, riding bikes, outdoor art and sensory experiences and so much more!  Our staff is a mature early childhood trained staff, who have a great deal of experience working with the preschool population.

If you are interested in more information, please call us at 914-472-4404 and request that we send you a brochure.  Thank you for your interest in our program!  I look forward to speaking with you and meeting your child.

Hello Scarsdale,

You have asked a great question as there are many fine day camps in Westchester.

First I would say that you should think about any other guides that you want to use in selecting the program. Do I want a big or small camp in terms of campers. Do I want to be able to have her go until she is 13 or 14 years old. Do I want food service available. Do I want a small facility or a big facility. Do I want it real close to my house or can it be 20 - 40 minutes bus/car ride away. All of these things are very important in this process. Once you answer these questions, the selection process becomes much more manageable.

I will share a "gem" of a program with you that is a short drive up the Taconic or 684. It is Summer Trails Day Camp which is located in Somers, New York. A 20 acre facility with a big pond for boating, an amazing music and dance program and only 500 campers.

What makes Summer Trails such a "gem" is that it offers a 35 year history of providing a wonderful child centered program for about $2,000 less than the lower Westchester Camps. While it does have a highly acclaimed baseball program, that is a separate program from the day camp. Take a look at Summer Trails traditional camp program on the web at www.summertrailsdaycamp.com .

You can also contact the NY-ACA office for additional recommendations in your area.
