We recently had an exhaust pipe and hood installed in our kitchen. Now it seems that the installation was not quite right, as water is getting into the house during heavy rains

There might be a couple of reasons why this is happening.  First, the connection between the pipe and the outside frame of the house is open and needs a silicon application.  Or, the vent stays open all the time.  It should be closed when the exhaust fan is off.  Or, rain enters directly into the vent with strong wind and this opens the vent.  This could be corrected by using a different kind of vent.   Call me at 914-316-3610 if you need further assistance and mention Zoomnia when you call.

was the hood vented out of the roof or the side of the house? regardless, it is either a flashing problem or a defective (or improperly installed) vent cover.

If by recently installed, you mean within the last year, contact the installer and explain the problem to him.

Westchester County Consumers Affairs expects a Contractor to take care of problems like this for at least one year after completion of the installation. If the contractor doesn't respond to your concern then you might consider writing to WCCA and ask them to help. That's what they are ther for.

Kitchen hood vents usually are quite simple to do. It is more likely to be drafty because of the nature of the the spring loaded dampener/flapper.

Water leaks are on the unusual side.  The proper exterior cap shelters the flap from rain whether it is on the roof or through the wall. The most watertight installations are under an overhang and therefore are the most desireable.

The type of exterior siding also effects the watertight worthiness of the installation. A masonry siding such as brick or stucco is the most difficult to do without the need for cacaulking. A good installation shouldn't even need caulking.

I have been doing installations like yours for considerably longer then 30 years. Try and get the original installer back before you look for another. It shouldn't cost you anything under those conditions. You are going to pay a disproportionate amount to a new one just to pay for his time.
