Can you reccomend a recruiter for someone who is looking to change careers? I am currently employed as an agent in the credit insurance industry and have been doing it for thirteen years. I previously used an executive recruiting firm who took $7,000 from me and then went Chapter 11. Not one interview. I am looking for a non fee-based recruiter interested in talking to someone that has a wide range of abitlities - from sales, marketing, operations management to business management. My salary range would need to be 80k+ w/ benefits. I am willing to look at most positions (open for new ventures).

Changing careers is always challenging but very doable and you are smart to be looking for a coach and there are a lot of very competnent coaches out there.  One of the things that distinguishes me is that I have been the head of Human Resources for many years so I know winning strategies from both sides of the desk; from the job hunters perspective as well as the hiring managers perspecive. Please visit my website to see what my clients have said; www.billbelknap.com.

TIP:  No matter what you decide never choose someone who want money upfront that is a major red flag.  Good coaches charge by the hour and never take an advance.

Good luck!

A red flag: never pay a recruiter!  They are usually paid by the hiring organization.  I recommend Karen Vasconi at Chriss Careers in  Tarrytown, NY, at kv@chrisscareers.com.  She is professional and very experienced.

At Career Resource Center, we are career coaches and counselors, not recruiters.  People see us as the best step before contacting a recruiter.  We tailor our work with individuals in transition to identify skills and strengths, develop search strategies, prepare for interviews and make the best choices for short and long term career management.  We prepare job search materials with our clients including resumes, bios, cover letters and other documents.  These increase confidence and enthusiasm for the search.

Some of our clients know what they want, but not how to make it happen.  Or, they don't know what they want to do at all.  The world of work has changed.  We use over 25 years of experience in a broad range of industries with employees at all levels to help our clients establish and achieve new career goals.  We will be happy to work with you.  Please mention Zoomnia when you contact us at 914 467-7878.  Just ask for Faye Kimerling.

Hello, Career Changer in New Rochelle,
(I was born and raised in New Rochelle  - went to Davis Elementary School)

I have a two part answer to your question - a recommendation of an excellent, experienced recruiter who specializes in finance (fee is paid by employer, NOT you), and the trouble you may have with recruiters when making career changes (they usually help people best who are staying in a career).

The latter first - Recruiters who are paid a fee by the employer and not the job candidate are the most common variety.  Many years ago, I was one.  Company's pay recruiters to sort through and find ideally experienced candidates for open positions, and usually they are looking for the recruiter to find someone who has already a good amount of experience doing the job they are looking to fill.   Why would a company pay a fee for someone who is making a career change and has to learn the ropes from outside the role or industry?   They don't.  So my clients have found that some nice recruiters try to help, but rarely can do more than find you a job along the path you are already on.   If you just want a better job with better pay, or if you can demonstrate the you are ready for the next level of advancement but your current employer doesn't agree, a recruiter can help you cross the bridge to your next job.

If you want to stay in finance, then call Bob Vitanza.  I have met or have had clients tell me about dozens or maybe a hundred recruiters in my 20 years of business experience, and none have come close to the effectiveness, integrity and kindness of Bob Vitanza.  He's based in southern Connecticut, but serves clients in the tri-state (NYC, Westchester, Southern CT, Northern New Jersey) region.  You can contact him and his partner at Licari and Vitanza - 203-431-3500 or e-mail RV@LV123.com.

If you want help making a career change, including getting a better clarity of purpose, career direction, strategic plan, networking, resume reinvention and interviewing to highlight your transferable skills, then perhaps you do want to speak to a career coach.  I've been doing it for 9 years this month (next year's the big party) and would direct you to my web site for full bio and information, including info on a free sample session.  I also have created a CD that people have used to create a new career vision.   Please visit www.jfcoach.com or call me toll free.   I am passionate about helping people find satisfaction and the most lucrative career possible.

Meanwhile, enjoy every day.

Looking forward,

Jonathan Flaks

I apoligise for not responding earlier, this is a new process for me.  As far as a non fee baased recuiter I would reccomend you!  Recruiters in general are looking to try and place a square peg into a square whole.  It is a lot less time consuming.  You need to understand and own your skills and see how the can transfer into an industry or career.  Then you need to target specific companies and contacts that can help you get there!

Success Image helps people to own their skills and develop a strategic plan and create a specialized marketing peice to help you in promoting youself.

If you would like to learn more about the process please vist our website at www.successimage-careers.com

Sincerely,

Diane Spizzirro, MS. NCC, NYLMHC
