What's the best way to get a dealer to give me more money for my trade-in? I plan on buying a 2008 Honda Accord and would like to get a really good trade-in value for my 2002 Dodge Intrepid with 68,000 miles. Thanks

A dealer will give you the current wholesale value for your vehicle - there are wholesale guides that they use to determine this price, as well as current wholesale auction prices. Thus, it is tough for a dealer to give more than this amount.. If you car is in amazing condition, with fresh tires, etc. this can help. Basically, a dealer uses the wholesale book and then will deduct for items that will cost HIM before he can turn around and retail your car. If you has to buy new tires, paint a bumper, etc. he will offer you less on trade. Also, be wary of unrealistically high trade-in values. A dealer will not give you a retail number for your trade-in - if he does, it's because he's asking too much for the car you are buying. You end up paying the same, but you'll feel better because you are "getting more" for your car. In reality, you are not. You're just paying more for the new car...
