My question is general. How do  I find a reliable, honest contarctor? Someone who does good work and won't start a job then disappear and go on to the next job before he finishes mine?
How do I check their work and reputation?

Good morning. Finding any type of honest, reliable service person can be challenging. I would start by asking friends, family, co-workers for referrals. Then branch out a little. Ask your mail/UPS/DHL people. Ask teachers, the bank teller, the manager at your favorite coffee house etc. Once you have a few names, you can check up on the businesses with the Better Business Bureau. Call the contractors and ask for references. These steps with put you on the right track ;-)

I am a licensed Contractor in Westchester and Putnam County.
we perform masonry and paving work; stamped concrete, stone walls, concrete counters, etc..

I recommend starting with the Yellow Book to and start calling Contractors in the trade that you need work done.
We advertise in the Yellow Book, and to say the least, it is not cheap.

That being said, you will find contractors that are serious about their business and want to perform well for their customers.
Ask friends to refer a Contractor that they have had a good experience with.
Ask other Contractors that you may now in other fields to refer a Contractor in the field you need one for.
I always refer other Contractors that do quality work, have good work ethics,  and are reliable.
A bad referral from me reflects poorly on me, and I don't want that.

Lastly, make sure the contractor can fund the work and is not entirely dependent on  your money to complete the work.
Typically, I only ask for a 25% deposit upon acceptance of the proposal, and the balance upon completion of the work, unless the value is over $10,000.00 then a progress schedule is prepared and the payments are based upon completed work.

Take your time selecting a good Contractor.
Get a feel for them as a person.
A wise guy attitude will get you a wise guy Contractor.

Good luck, and always hire a licensed AND insured Contractor.

I think what everyonr is missing is the obvious. The bottom line is if you want anything done you have to pay a fair price. I remodel homes and have been doing it since 1983 in the begining I didnt charge enough and was always busy chasing Peter to pay Paul. If I were getting the right price for the project I would not have had to leave the job to go and start another so I would have cash flow.

I am a contractor and I can tell you that if it was my house I would start with the Building Department. Get a couple of names from them and do additional research into them on your own.
