I am looking to upgrade my furnance.  I have a heat pump/furnance/R22 air conditioning system that is about 19 years old.  While getting estimates, one company is telling me that I need to replace all three parts of the unit, because of the cancellation of R22.  Another contractor is telling me that he has an adapter which will allow me to just change the heat pump and furnance.  When I went back to the original contractor he told me that changing only the pump and furnance is a very dangerous thing to do.

Can anyone tell me which statement I can believe?

Thanks

Hi,

You can convert the system but I would not advise it. The AC coil has to be cleaned and possibly changed and the line set (connecting the condenser to the AC coil) needs to be checked for proper sizing and also be cleaned for the new refrigerant..

Why spend all the time and effort to do that on a sytem that is 19 years old?

Budget aside, I would agree that the entire system should be replaced. This insures that you have matching components that are all new. This should give you greater efficiency and peace of mind.

Feel free to contact us for further info. Happy Holidays!
