I OWN A VERY OLD DESKTOP COMPUTER . My question to you is how can I get my computer to a safe mode so I can save my pictures on a cd. My computer after I download a software just went on to a dark screen and when I reboot and turn on I get a black screen. what can I do to just put this in a safe mode and safe my files to a cd

You can enter safe mode by tapping the F8 key when the PC manufacture's splash screen appears as the PC boots. Here is an article that describes safe mode:

If the PC still fails to boot into safe mode, the  hard drive can be removed from the failing PC and connected to another PC. The files you need can then be extracted from the hard drive. EWIGGS Computer Support can help you with this option.
