Thank you for your inquiry.

Basically, learning to read the nutrition guide on the side of the food packages you eat is a good start.  But understanding each item is another story.  Knowing what you put into your body and what those ingredients do is important.  It is undeniable that people with diabetes cannot utilize the glucose they take into their body due to the disease's effects on the pancreas.  Education and motivation are the two best friends anyone with a weight issue can have.

Consuming foods that have a low glycemic index as opposed to a high one is beneficial to your body's need for insulin production.  The lower it is, the slower the breakdown of the carbohydrates and absorption into your blood.  If you take in foods with a high glycemic index, the demand for the pancreas to produce insulin is high therefore carbohydrates breakdown faster and then you find yourself hungry sooner than you thought.

WSPT has a wonderful health program designed for people with diabetes.  Its outcomes were so profound that it evolved into a weight management program for everyone interested in losing weight and feeling better.  We are currently in the process of putting together our next set of classes beginning October 1st and 2nd.  They meet weekly, one in the evening and one in the early afternoon.

It is a great opportunity to manage your health and diabetes with people who share the same concerns.  Knowing you should eat better is one thing, but reaching a point where you crave healthier foods rather than the junk food is another.  Finding that inner drive is tackled in our program.  Please visit our webiste at www.wspt.org and click on the nutrition tab and follow the link to our Transitions Lifestyle Program.  Or call us at 718-409-9444 or email to info@wspt.org for more information.
