My 17 month old son is waivering between below the growth charts and right at the 3% percentile. He has never been a good eater. He eats a variety of foods, but very small amounts. We add oils, butters, fats, etc. to everything possible. He eats ice cream, cheeses, peanut butter, etc. We can't force him to eat enough, obviously. Is there anything else we can do besides ride this out? Is he still healthy?

You may need to know more specifically which fats, proteins, veggies, and grains your son needs to eat to keep his pH and blood sugar balanced all day. When I test clients for their Metabolic Type I check to see if they are Anabolic or Catabolic as well. I do a 2 1/2 hour test and check 15 different markers to see what would match his Metabolic functioning. I'm just outside of Peekskill and can do the test on Sunday Mornings or weekdays if he is available.

Dear Briarcliff Resident,

Since your child is at the 3% percentile for height this is a sign of "failure to thrive".   There are a number of ways to help a child like yours.   There are safe nutritional supplements to improve taste buds and increase appetite.    Increasing not only calories, but also protein, fats and carbs are critical to help in growth.   I would also check the child's growth hormone levels with a pediatric endocrinologist to see if the poor growth is related to a hormone imbalance.   Also, as parents are you both small?  This also should be taken into consideration.    Rather than peanut butter, there are other more nutritious and caloric nut butters that would promote better growth.   Often gluten-sensitivity can INTERFERE with nutrient absorption.   Avoiding barley, rye and wheat can improve nutritional absorption.   Rice and oats are better sources of grains.

I hope my advice offers you some idea of how nutrition can make a difference in a child's life!

For further information please feel free to contact me at my office 914-242-0124.  I have been in private practice for 19.5 years and have had wonderful results with poor growth in toddlers.   I have both a traditional nutrition background coupled with an integrative holistic knowledge of nutrition.

Sincerely,

Dina Khader, MS, RD, CDN, IFHI

Dear Concerned Mom:

It sounds like you are doing a good job trying to get some healthy foods into your 17 month year old.  It's not easy when children do not want to eat.  I speak from experience.  I have five children of my own.  There are two things that I would suggest.  I would like to see him take a nutritionally balanced multiple.  I carry a product called Sea Aloe which is liquid, tastes good, and is loaded with all natural ingredients.  This is what I give my young ones.

The other thing is that whenever there is or may be a growth issue, I immediately think cranial faults.  Simply put, cranial faults mean that there is a fixation of one or more of the cranial bones.  To find out more on this, please go to my website (www.drcoppolaforhealth.com) and go to newsletters on the upper right hand side of the home page.  Then click on cranial faults.  It will tell you all about it.

If the sphenoid bone gets fixated, it will affect the pituitary gland which controls all of your hormones.  If the pituitary is affected, it will affect the child's growth.  Fixing the cranial fault is very easy and the technique is very gentle.

If you have any questions, you can call me at (914)592-1733 or e-mail me at painreliefcare@aol.com.

Sincerely,

Dr. Charles Coppola
