I am looking for a dentist to safely remove my mercury fillings. What is the certification I should be looking for, and what materials are used to replace the fillings?

The removal of old amalgam fillings is not a procedure that should be taken lightly.  Many Dentists will simply drill out the old fillings and replace them with non-mercury containing fillings but what happens to the grindings of the old filling?  After determining for sure that the fillings should be removed (current ADA position is that existing fillings are safe and do not leach out mercury), a dentist who takes this procedure seriously should be selected.  A rubber dam material is placed to prevent accidental swallowing of any of the grindings and the assistant should be using a high volume suction during the process.

The selection of alternate filling materials will likely vary from composite resin (tooth colored filling) to a gold or porcelain inlay or a crown restoration made from ceramic or non toxic materials.  Each tooth is different and the decision of what type of restoration to be placed should be predetermined after a thorough exam by your dentist.

Our office has always placed the overall health of the patient, not just treating their teeth and gums as our primary focus.  We are well trained in the techniques listed above and perform these services routinely.

Removal of fillings under high speed suction removes all mercury vapor that is of danger. My question is....have you been told to remove them because they are toxic...if so...run! Mercury based amalgam fillings are perfectly safe in the mouth and cause no danger at all. I have many amalgam fillings present in my own mouth...They are still the restoration of choice for the posterior portion of the mouth. Go to the ADA website to learn more...don't be scared into removal of perfectly good fillings.

Although I am not a dentist, I am a holistic Chiropractor. You want to find a holistic dentist who will remove the amalgams out safely. Whenever the amalgams are removed, even if done properly, there is always a chance vapors and/or particles will be released into the mouth and potentially swallowed. Once fillings are removed, I would urge you to come in for a de-tox foot bath whereby heavy metals and other toxins are pulled out from the body through pores of the feet. Since heavy metals and toxins tend to accumulate in the liver, you would also want to start taking a good Liver De-tox supplement. (I provide highly specialized nutritional supplements in my practice.) I welcome your questions or comments. Dr. Charles Coppola 914.592.1733 painreliefcare@aol.com www.drcoppolaforhealth.com
