At Career Resource Center, we are experts at putting you on paper.  In your situation, 35 years with one company, there are specific career issues to consider before putting pen to paper.  While you can find a listing of firms to help you with your resume in the telephone book or on computer search sites, even a small amount of extra research can provide big dividends when making your selection.

I prefer to meet clients in person, and if this is important to you, select several firms in your geographic area.  Prepare some questions that you think will give you the best information before you do your "hiring."

  • What is the approach to resume writing?  In your case this question is critical.  If the goal of the resume writer is to prepare a comprehensive document of your 35-year career, you are in the wrong place.  Look for someone who can identify your career themes and skills demonstrated in  your work experience and knows how to represent them in words that speak to today's hiring managers.
  • Are the formats tailored to the client?  If all client resumes are formatted exactly the same, this is not the best choice for you.   Your efforts should be directed toward working with someone who can elicit your skills and strengths, your workstyle and your knowledge, and create a document that represents you.  Ask if you can see different formats before making your decision.
  • What is the scope of the firm's experience?  In this market especially, you want to work with someone who knows what is needed in the world of work today.  While this will vary with different positions, the key to fitting into today's workplace is competence, flexibility, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.  Knowing how to show this in your resume will refresh your image and make your resume stand out.
  • How much, and when?  Fees are important and must be matched against your needs.  While one firm may promise paper copies or updates for your lifetime, you have no idea what their lifetime will be.  Perhaps you need an electronic copy.  Maybe you need a cover letter also.  Do you need a rush job?  Preparation and completion should not take longer than two weeks.  If you have an old resume that needs updating, what are the fees?  If you have a resume that just needs a critique, what will that cost?  Think about your needs before you call so you can be sure the agreed fee covers everything.  Unless there are special circumstances, retain a portion of the payment until the job is completed to your satisfaction.
  • Will there be additional assistance?  Your resume is a primary job search document.  It presents your "story," which can be started in a cover letter and expanded in an interview.  A good firm will be able to demonstrate how your resume fits into your entire job search strategy so you can use it with confidence.  If your firm does not ask how you will be using your resume, you still need to know the answer.
  • How to decide?  After you have gathered enough information to feel comfortable making a decision, ask your network for recommendations and suggestions for career counselors or resume writers.  This may well reinforce your own choice.
