Since MS will not allow you to install an OS older than your current Vista - you would have to wipe the hard drive, install a fresh copy of XP and ALL the necessary VAIO drivers.

$150 complete if you need professional assistance.

Assuming that you want to REPLACE Vista with XP rather than create a dual-boot environment, you'll need to remove Vista first.  That means backing up any data you want ot see again and formatting the drive for the new install.  WIndows is picky about downgrades and you probably got a message stating that you can't install XP because a newer version os Windows is already present on the PC.
