I am 49 years old and have very weak nails.  This has been a problem all of my life.  They break easily and split.  During the winter months the skin around my nails gets very dry and sometimes cracks, but the rest of my hands are not dry.  I don't necessarily want long nails but I do want presentable short nails.  I don't drink or smoke and eat what I believe to be a healthy diet.  I swim daily for exercise.

One of the many causes of weak nails could be your diet. Not only is the type and total amount of protien and calcium you are consuming evaluated upon an intial consult but they phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals you are consuming in the right balance. Exercise also plays a role, especially weight bearing exercise such as free weights or push-ups.  Should you wish a consult to have your individual needs evaluated, please call(914)935-0123.

Sincerely,

Dear 'Weak Nails':

Weak and brittle nails are usually due to malnutrition, an iron deficiency, or a calcium deficiency.  If you have vertical ridges on your nails, it usually indicates an immune issue, whereas horizontal ridges usually indicate a liver ussue.

I believe the best way to take nutritionals is to find out exactly what your body needs rather than taking different products for different problems.  I would recommend doing a complete nutritional work-up to see exactly what nutrition you really need.  I also check for any immune issues going on in the body and for any heavy metals that you may have.

If this is something that interests you, feel free to eMail me or call my office.

Sincerely,

Dr. Charles Coppola

nail problems can be caused  by many factors--digestive problems, thyroid problems, chronic inflamation, or nutrient defeciency--i would explore those areas to try to determine just what is the cause of your problem--with some patients just giving them a specific supplement fixed their nail issue you can reach me at 914-939-3621 to further explore this problem
