Hi,

You have at least 3 options to create domestic hot water. First you could replace the existing water heater which I assume is natural gas. Second you could install an indirect fired water heater which connects to your existing heating boiler. This is an extremely efficient way to make hot water. Third you could install an indepentent natural gas tankless water heater. This is largely dependent of the size of your existing gas service. If your gas service needs to be upgraded to accomodate the new gas demand, it can be an expensive proposition.

We'd be happy to come and see your existing conditions and review your options.

Tankless water heaters are gas fired. They are vented directly through the wall to outside. They don't usually work in conjunction with the boiler, so your type of heat is not important, just that you have gas to the home. They require a large volume of gas (but are still cheaper to operate because they only heat on demand), so often we need to up-grade the size of your gas meter. Sizing of the unit is crucial as it must be able to heat the entire volume of water flowing at any given time. We have installed many of this type heater (not everyone has experience with this fairly new technology) and deal with the Noritz brand.

I have thirty-five years experience as a plumber and am an expert in all types of hydronic heating. I have taught plumbing for the IMPW and beside a master plumber's licence I have a state licence to test backflow valves, certified installer for Uponor Wirsbo in floor radiant heat and Generac emergency stand-by generators and an Assc. degree in Mechanical Engineering. My company services south west Westchester.
