hi, i am 62, now 5 years cancer free, but struggling with severe osteoporosis, an outcome of 5 years of estrogen blocking drugs even while taking osteoporosis drugs. I have not exercised in the last 5 years, but in my 40s and 50s enjoyed active weight lifting on my own as well as with personal trainers.  I need both motivational help and someone who is experienced working with clients who have substantial osteoporosis. I am overweight by about 25 pounds and sugar addictive. Can you help? I want very much to be stronger and healthier.

Hello,

www.elizabethmillerfit.com

I would love to discuss the possibility of training with you.  I own an in-home personal training company in Westchester name Elizabeth Miller Fit, LLC, and I specialize in women's fitness.  I have a substantial amount of experience with clients who have osteopenia and osteoporosis.  The majority of my individual clients are women in their 40s, 50s and 60s, and my eldest client currently is 86.  Additionally, I teach fitness classes in the Wilder Balter adult active condominium communuties in Westchester (http://www.wbhomes.com/index_flash.html).  These classes provide the residents, all 55+ years old, with a combination of aerobics and strength training.  Several of these individuals are as well dealing with osteopenia and osteoporosis.

Aside from my professional work, my mother has been struggling with osteoporosis.  I have been training my mother for years, which has done a great deal to stave off further bone loss, but her physician has yet to find a medication that works best for my mother.  I have personally witnessed her frustration and anxieties and am sensitive to her experience.

Please feel free to visit my website, email or call me.  I would love to speak further with you.

Thanks so much for the question.  There are many approaches to osteoporosis,  some of which directly address bone strength through weight-bearing exercise using weights or the body's own weight, some use direct pressure or percussive movement to stimulate bone growth, and some take a more indirect approach to improve balance, posture and fall response so you're less likely to fall and break a bone.

Because group classes are fun and less expensive than private sessions, you might enjoy taking a beginner's or gentle yoga, tai chi or Pilates class which will build strength (and, therefore bone density) and improve posture and balance.  You might also consider a "body sculpting" class where weights or rubber bands are used for resistance.  There are some excellent classes offered right there in Ossining in both Tai Chi and Yoga.

I am currently in the process of becoming a teacher in a Feldenkrais Method(r)-based program specifically geared toward osteoporosis called Bones for Life (r), which focuses on percussive movement, educating the body on how to improve posture, balance and movement in walking, and better approaches to falling.  I could refer you to a fully-certified teacher in this method, if you like.  I also offer private sessions and classes that combine several mind-body disciplines in a way that is effective to address issues such as this.  Please contact me if I can be of further help (dlayton@verizon.net) or see my website (www.breathcenteredfitness.com).

Hi, I am personal trainer who works mostly with women over 40, many of whom have health issues like osteoporosis, arthritis, and other chronic conditions. My name is Janet Goldblatt and you can reach me at mimjp6@gmail.com. It is true that exercise is hugely beneficial to osteoporosis patients, but it important that these be done correctly, and with proper supervision, at least at first. Doing gentle weight-bearing exercise can help to prevent further bone loss, or at least slow down the disease's progression.
