Dear Low Back Pain Sufferer:

Swimming is a great exercise for the whole body.  If you suffer from severe low back pain as you mentioned, I would definitely avoid diving of any kind as well as trying to swim fast or race anyone.  You do not want to get a severe back spasm or painful attack while in the water.  I would concentrate on slow, easy strokes.

However, in all honesty, I would want to find out why you are suffering from severe low back pain and then fix the problem instead of trying to swim around it (no pun intended).

I am a pain and sports injury specialist.  If you want to find out what is going on with your low back, and fix it so that your back is no longer an issue, I am sure I can help you.

If you have any questions, feel free to call me at 914.592.1733 or eMail me at painreliefcare@aol.com.  My office is in Elmsford which is a very short drive from Tarrytown.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Dr. Charles Coppola

Greetings,

As I am not aware of any stroke in swimming to improve lower back pain, I do know that lower back pain is most commonly assoicated with tight hamstrings 50% of the time.  The other percentage of lower back pain is assoicated with nerve function issues.  When I care for athletes in my office I explain that in order to get the most from your game (swimming, golf, baseball, running, etc...) you want to be sure your nervous system is functioning at its optimum.  Think of it this way decreased function within the nervous system increases your chance of injury. I  utilize equipment that measures the function of one's nervous system and allows me to see first hand where stress is most effecting the body.  This is relevent to you because sometimes when one's nervous system is not functioning at its optimum pain is one of the more common symptoms although not limited too.  My wife and I run a full service wellness center in Mamaroneck NY called "The Greater Wellbeing".  I would love to discuss some our options that we have in our office that can help with your particular problem.  You can contact my office at 914-381-3237 ask for Lydia.

Yours in health,

Dr. David R. LaRocco

Before we discuss what the best way to solve this problem is, we need to find out  exactly what we are dealing with.  While the problem may be back pain from "golf", what exactly is the injury?  Do you now have a herniated disc?, a ligament injury or a problem with the paraspinal musculature?

The first step is a good physical examination and the appropriate studies, such as an MRI to see what is there, only then can we safely discuss and proceed with corrective measures.  Just taking a quess at the problem and then working on it with exercises or other modalities at best may not be beneficial and at worst can cause further damage.

I would be happy to discuss this with you further, thank you
