Question    posted to Sports Injury Specialists on 11/19/08 07:44 AM, Armonk, NY 10504
I was doing a long walk (8 miles) after not walking that much for a few months and I  tore my muscle facia on my shin. There is now a small dent and a small bump and almost no pain. I put ice on this initailly when the area was swolen but now I just have the bump/dent and am not really sure what I should do to get this to heal? The doctor I saw wasn't really sure what the bump was, but he thinks I tore the fascia over the muscle. What can I do to get this to heal?
Thanks,

Dear "Torn Fascia?":

From what you are saying, I do not think that the fascia is torn.  Fascia is a very strong connective tissue sheath, and I cannot imagine tearing it simply from doing a long walk, even if you have not walked that far in a while.  It sounds to me like it may be a couple of things. I have a feeling that you twisted or strained your knee &/or ankle, causing an imbalance in the muscular pull in your leg.

If a joint (say your knee or ankle) is strained, it does not necessarily mean you will have pain.  The bones of the joint can shift and cause tension on the surrounding tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia)  If left untreated it will eventually start to get inflamed and result in pain, and weakness in the joint.

In all honesty, I would have to check it out to find out exactly what is the problem.  Whatever the problem I feel very confident I can help you.  I have treated many knee and ankle problems.  I use specialized techniques for balancing and strengthening any muscle in the body.

Acupuncture can move the extra tissue out of the bumpy area and build tissue in the indented part. It does this by helping to move energy in and out of the area, flushing stagnation and nourishing the sluggish area. I work with lots of athletes and folks with athletic life styles and what you have isn't unusual.

Two possible solutions come to mind for your shin to reduce swelling and and promote fascial healing.  One is kinesio tape and the second would be the Cold laser.  You can do a google search on both for more detailed info. I would look on Erchonia's website for the cold laser (that's the manufacturer).  My office website has basic info as well www.thegreaterwellbeing.com. Both are excellent at reducing soft tissue injuries.  Kinesio tape was made famous in this summers olympics in women's beach volleyball by Kerri Walsh who had it on her shoulder and the cold laser is recommended and used by individuals such as Tiger Wooods and Lance Armstrong.  I recommend and use both in my practice.  Both my wife and I own and operate a Holistic Wellness center in Mamaroneck called "The Greater Wellbeing"  Happy to offer 20 minutes of my time to discuss this matter in further detail to see if some of my options are right for you.  Contact my office @ 914-381-3237 ask for Lydia.

Best wishes in your health,

It appears, from your description , that the injury resulted in the formation of stagnant blood and energy in that area of your body. Acupuncture and Oriental medicine may be beneficial to you in helping to accelerate the healing process by clearing stagnation and restoring a free flow of blood and energy to the area. The "bump/dent" that you have can occur when muscle and/or fascia tears and retracts from its origin or insertion thereby forming scar tissue. The musculature then takes longer to heal due to diminished blood supply. Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the region and Chinese massage (one modality of Oriental medicine) can help to break-up the scar tissue. The result is that you heal faster! I am a licensed Acupuncturist and Oriental medicine practitioner. I specialize in treating patients with sports injuries and have been doing so at the SawMIll Club in Mt. Kisco since 2002. I have seen many of the club's members over the years for various injuries but I also see non-members there as well. I will be happy to help you or answer any further questions that you may have.
