My question is regarding the safest water for my family.  I have 2 children under 5 and our house has well water.  We have been drinking bottled water but I just discovered that the Poland Spring 5 gallon bottles are #7 polycarbonate plastic.  From doing some superficial research, I also understand that the plastic filters and pitcher in a Brita-type set-up might also be problematic.  I have no reason to believe that there is anything wrong with my tap water except I worry about pesticides.  Any advice?

There are three things you can do:

1. Get your well water tested for contaminants like pesticides to find out if it is truly safe.

2. Buy bottled water from a glass bottle, like Voss or similar bottled water that is contained in glass.

Note: Either way make sure you add fluoride to your water or take a fluoride supplement, since your kids may be more prone to tooth decay and  cavities  because neither well water or bottled water contains fluoride.

I hope this helps!

I transfer my filtered water to glass containers or a thermos. I also only filter what I need and don't leave it standing around or allow it to heat up. That's where the leeching problem occurs.

Drinking water is one of the most important nutrients that we take in daily. There are quite a few variables that influence the quality of the water you drink and also your subsequent health.

I am a clinical nutritionist and home wellness consultant. Improving air , water and sleep quality are 3 of the things our practice specializes in.

Your water's pH, mineral content, volatile chemical content, metal content and magnetic charge all affect the quality of the water. Poland Spring is what we used to drink but we've switched to a system from Japan, which we now represent ,that mineralizes, filters, alkalizes and energizes the water from your tap. We no longer use plastic water bottles but have bought Sigg metal water bottles and fill them from the water cooler.

The difference in drinking quality water is that it is better absorbed by your cells, (actually hydrating you) whereas poor quality water will actually take minerals out of your body when you drink it (ever notice how fast you pee when you drink most bottled waters?)

The plastics that may be leaking into the bottled water are yet another concern as they are known carcinogens.

By switching to a quality energized water system, we have eliminated buying and thereby disposing of hundreds of water bottles a year. It is estimated that 60 billion water bottles do not get recycled annually in the US and find their way into landfills. We are also saving money by not buying cases of water any longer nor renting larger water jugs from Poland Spring. Our payback on the system was 3 months and we have the added satisfaction of not contributing to our pollution problem with plastics.

You're right to be concerned about your water quality, and it sounds like you already have a pretty good grasp of what to look out for.  Well water, while often less polluted than municipal water supplies, should still be filtered to remove pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals that leach through the ground.  I highly recommend reverse osmosis filtration systems, as it is one of the safest and most reliable ways to filter your drinking water.  I have found the Water Factory SQC series to be an excellent reverse osmosis solution.

Another option is to switch your brand of bottled water.  Bottled water in plastic containers does present a risk of plastic contamination.  It is best to use bottled water from a glass container.  I recommend Mountain Valley Spring Water, as it comes in glass containers and safe plastic bottles, both in individual sizes and for water coolers.  It is also very clean and has a higher pH level than most other bottled waters.

I hope this helps with your water concerns!

Sincerely,
Dina Khader, MS, RD, CDN
