The good news is that there are many approaches to treating compulsive eating. The bad news is that you have to look around a bit for the approach that is the most effective for you. Acupuncture addresses the emotional, spiritual and physical issues often associated with compulsive eating. Our brains are wonderful little factories. Acupuncture helps brain chemistry and reduces cravings. It also helps you to produce your own dopamine, endorphins and seratonine, so you you don't have to look outside yourself for these mood modulators. Eating all day is often a way to get more dopamine when you aren't producing enough yourself. Acupuncture also helps regulate blood sugar and can often prevent Type 2 Diabetes. Metabolic Nutrition is another approach to treating compulsive eating. It matches you with the foods that will help balance your blood sugar and pH all day long keeping you relaxed and feeling more harmonious without the slumps that often cause us to overeat. It requires a comprehensive test that monitors 15 different markers over 2 1/2 hours to uncover the dominant Metabolic Type that you inherited from your great great grandparents. It then helps focus your food choices on those that are the most beneficial to your Type. Life Coaching is another approach to compulsive eating. Your coach works with you to plan a strategy that you would be willing to follow to switch habits from unconscious actions to finding out what would really nourish your heart, soul and body. Sometimes finding a certain passion and becoming immersed will help you forget about food that is harmful to you and find nourishment to continue your new love. My clients have found themselves dancing, playing music, doing sports, writing, acting and the old behaviors drop away. It takes time for this approach to work. Usually 6 months minimum. You can find out more about the actual programs for either acupuncture, Life Coaching or Metabolic Nutrition at www.gotbetterhealth.com or call me at 917-273-1308 if you have more specific questions.

Re: Compulsive Eating & Type II Diabetes

Let's first talk about Type II Diabetes. This is a condition whereby the liver, muscle, and fat (Adipose) tissues of the body become desensitized to its own insulin. In other words, the pancreas is producing insulin, however these tissues do not recognize it.  As a result, they stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin.  This condition is often referred to as Syndrome X.  The end result is that you have too much insulin.  Since insulin is a fat-forming hormone, Type II Diabetes is often associated with weight gain and obesity.

A major precipitating factor in Type II Diabetes is chronic stress leading to Adrenal Fatigue. Your adrenal glands are your stress glands.  Two primary hormones produced by the adrenal glands associated with stress are cortisol and DHEA.  DHEA plays many roles in enhancing health and longevity, helping to generate the sex hormones, enhancing muscle mass, decreasing body fat, and stimulating the formation of strong bone.

During times of stress, the adrenal glands will produce cortisol, and decrease DHEA production.  This is a self-regulating system which will sop the production of cortisol and increase the production of DHEA once the stress is over.  Chronic stress will turn off this self-regulating system.  Cortisol levels increase and DHEA levels decrease dramatically.  Elevated cortisol affects many organ systems and causes you to become desensitized to your own insulin, lead to eating and emotional disorders, increase blood sugar levels, blood pressure, inhibit growth hormone levels, decrease pituitary hormones, interfere with thyroid hormone activity (just to mention a few!) Lowered thyroid hormone production affects the body’s entire metabolic rate.

Compulsive eating disorders are associated with deep seated emotional issues, brain imbalances, and adrenal fatigue. I would approach these issues by performing Chakra and emotional release techniques, specialized nutritional supplementation to strengthen the adrenal glands, as well as any other suffering organs, and decrease the excess cortisol. Once this is accomplished, the self regulating system should turn on and start producing DHEA again. I would also utilize Brain Balancing Technique and Body Restoration Technique to balance the communication pathways of the brain and adrenal glands.

I realize I have given you a very in-depth answer. Feel free to call to call or email.

Sincerely,

Dr. Charles Coppola
