I am a reseller of both HP and Dell, and I have found that what it really comes down to is the service that you get. Most computer companies now outsource, that is if you don't know the secrets ... If you buy from either of these companies it is best to order from their business sites. The reason is that you will receive better US based help.

Dell in particular has now released a line of Laptops and Desktops (Inspiron) that I honestly don't like. The Optiplex and Vostro offer much better servicability and reliability.

HP is good and offers some really nice offerings both on the business as well as the home side. HP sometimes seems to be a bit pricier, but I think the quality assurance in manufactring is a bit better.

I would like to recommend Acer, they are the third largest PC manufaturer and they do offer some nice balance between price and performance.

As far as actually recommending a particular model, it really depends on your budget, what size screen you like, do you need software (such as Microsoft Office)

The price points are usally starting at $799 for very basic units and topping off at about $1,200 for something really good.

Laptops are usally more expensive and much more costly to service, so there I would always buy the extended warranty.

XP is much better, but will now become harder to find and if you are buying new, I would suggest Windows Vista with service pack 1. Vista since the release of the service pack has become more stable, just make sure you have at least 2GB of RAM. Eventually you will be forced to use this OS so you might as well get use to it.

Business models will still offer the option to have XP installed (now called a "downgraded")

If you need further assistance or would like white-glove purchasing assitance, and in-home setup please call us at (845) 426-5922 we have over 20 years of experience.

Either one is ok for what you are going to be using it for. Both company's flop back and forth from being 1 and 2 in the computer world.

Depending on your personal preference should help you decide between Vista or XP. Most of the compatibility issues from Vista have been resolved. But XP is familiar, and Microsoft will support it for another 5 years.

Dont pay anymore than $600-$800 for a laptop. Also look into refurbished computers. Sometimes you can get a really good deal for a nearly new machine.

One last thing...  Acer is a good computer company, as well. They give you a lot for the money.

Which is better dell or hp. can you recommend a good basic desktop and a laptop. mostly for email and internet.some pictures etc. also which is better vista or xp. Either is ok but dell is les expensive and offers free shipping. Dell also has up to 4gb of memory instead of only 2gb of memory. Vista is new but xp is easier to use for your purposes. I can wi-fi the laptop so that it can be used wireless in a business setting or at home for a fee. Software training can be for a fee as well.
