Is there a holistic approach to treating knee pain and meniscus damage?

Knee pain is the second most common complaint next to back pain. 14.9% of all adults in the U.S. have knee pain. This results in 19 million doctor visits made by Americans each year for knee pain. (source: Dr. Eric Berg & “The Body Restoration Technique”)

Traditional treatments include physical therapy, arthroscopic surgery, oral steroids, and injections, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and total knee replacement.

Steroids, whether given orally or by injections may have serious side effects like osteoporosis, loss of bone mineral density, avascular necrosis, adrenal suppression, pathologic fractures, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, soft tissue calcification, and necrotizing fascitis.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have been associated with gastrointestinal complications. Go online to learn more on this.

Many times the above treatments have little, or less than desirable results. The reason for this is because there may be other issues affecting the knee that have not been addressed. There are four organs that have been shown to have an association with knee pain; and if the organ-knee relationship is not disassociated, the knee will never fully recover, no matter what you do to it.

The following organs have been shown to have an association with knee pain:

1.   Adrenal Glands
Our Adrenal Glands are our stress glands. Of all the organs that are associated with knee pain, they have the greatest impact. Our Adrenal Glands help to protect and support all our joints during times of stress. When a person is under constant stress (and many people don’t even realize how stressed they are) their Adrenal Glands become fatigued. When our Adrenal Glands are fatigued, they cannot support and protect our joints as well as they normally would. When a joint is under stress, if it is not properly supported, it becomes more vulnerable to injury. Our knees, for the most part, are under constant stress from standing, bending, walking, running, and going up and down stairs. If our Adrenal Glands are weak, these movements have more of an impact on our knees than they normally would. This can result in damage to the ligaments, tendons, and/or meniscus of the knee.

Additionally, since the Adrenal Glands deal with stress and trauma, any type of trauma to the knees can create an adrenal-knee connection.

Our Adrenal Glands produce a number of hormones. One of which is Cortisol. Cortisol is an anti-inflammatory steroid. If our Adrenal Glands become so fatigued that they cannot produce Cortisol in the necessary amounts, we develop chronic inflammation. Inflammation tends to go into weak joints, and if our knee is in a weakened state due to weak Adrenal Glands or some type of trauma, guess where the inflammation is going to go.

Inflammation in any joint creates pain, decreased range of motion, and if long-term, it will result in further damage to that joint.

2. Three other organs (the Bladder, Kidneys and the Ovaries) are also a common source
of knee pain due to numerous lymph node drainage into the knee.

Body Restoration Technique (BRT) is an excellent technique for balancing out the internal communication pathways between one part of the body (whether it be an organ, joint, or muscle) and another part of the body. I use it as part of my normal treatment in most cases, and use it almost exclusively for any type of knee pain. The results are nothing short of remarkable.

True Story. A patient recently came in to see me due to severe knee pain. This patient rated the pain a 14 on a scale of 1-10. This patient originally injured his knee in 2002. Pain was bearable for approximately two years, but then while doing a normal household chore, heard a “pop” in the knee. CT scan revealed a torn meniscus. This resulted in arthroscopic surgery to repair the tear, followed by physical therapy. Afterwards, the knee felt “pretty good” for a while; but then the pain started to come back and slowly became progressively worse. This patient once again saw an Orthopedic surgeon who recommended a series of cortisone shots (which did not help) and then a series of gel shots (only helped a little). The Orthopedic surgeon then recommended a total knee replacement which the patient agreed to and had last year. This was followed by P.T. which this patient was still having when we first spoke. I was told that since the surgery, the pain has been getting progressively worse, not better. My examination of the knee revealed the meniscus and the ligaments of the knee to be weak. The knee was inflamed and swollen and had a limited range of motion. All the muscles of the knee were also weak. In addition, both Adrenal Glands had a connection with the knee.

This is a perfect example of how the Adrenal Glands impact the knee. If you don’t fix the Adrenal or other organ relationships to the knee, it doesn’t matter what you do, the knee will never fully recover. In this case, the knee had been getting progressively worse.

To date, I have treated this patient for the past month, and the knee pain is now down to a 4. This patient still walks with a limp, but can now walk without the use of a cane. Keep in mind, this patient has been in severe pain, (a 14 out of 10) even with physical therapy. This technique is phenomenal!!  The numbness in the knee is a lot less and her range of motion in the knee joint is greatly improved.  I feel confident that by the time I finish treating the knee, the patient will be pain-free, the swelling will be gone and the ligaments, meniscus and muscles of the knee will all be strong.

This Month’s Special:
30% off the normal fee of $100 for examination of the knee(s).

Between now and June 30, 2008 the knee examination will only be $70

Holistic medicine with complementary medicine looks to catalyze the body's own inherent resources to heal itself. Sometimes the damage is too severe for that to occur but, fortunately that is more frequently not the case and the body will most often respond to  these conservative medicines.

Because not all miniscus damage and knee pain is the same the best approach is to evaluate the knee, review tests you may have had and then perhaps a trial of treatments would be in order.

I am a chiropractor and an acupuncturist and have succesfully treated many such cases over the years. I would be happy to take a look at your case if you wish.

Yes there is a holistic way to treat knee pain and meniscal damage. Depending on the severity of damage, there are a few ways to treat the knee. One is by adjustments to the knee to make sure the knee joint is in alignment. Secondly, thru therapeutic modalities (ultrasound, electric stimulation, cold laser) to reduce inflammation and increase circulation to the affected knee. Thirdly, proper nutritional supplements to increase meniscal strength and ligament strength. Lastly, by strengthening the muscles around the knee to ease the weight put on the knee directly.

My name is Dr. Glenn Krieger of Sound Sports & Family Chiropractic.

My office is located in Mamaroneck. We specialize in sports injuries and family care.  Our office has a rehabilitation gym on site and  all the latest state of the art technology for treating this injury and many other injuries. If I can be of  any assistance  please call our office at 914-698-9283.

When you mean holistic, I am assuming w/o drugs and/or sugery?

In our office my wife and I use a state of the art cold laser technology from Erchonia.  There is also nutrition that will help facilitate the healing of the meniscus.  Of course the last and most important piece of the puzzle is addressing nerve system function.  Nerves controlled via the brain go everywhere and control everything in the body including the meniscus and the surrounding muscles.  We also use NASA space certified technology to scan the nerve system to ensure your body is not stressed out and fully functioning.  I would love the opportunity to discuss your knee pain with you further and assist you in any way shape or form.

Yours in health,

Dr. David R. LaRocco, Chiropractor
