I am a certified Personal trainer who can offer you a few different suggestion for the tightness in your neck and shoulders. I personally experience the tightness and have attended fabulous sessions with a Holistic Physical Therapist who specializes in myofascial release as well as zero balancing. She has released my muscles and has given me the strength and ability to weight train myself as well as train my clients.

In addition to massage and stretching, it is important to keep your muscles strong as well as maintain proper posture and balance which I specialize in. I train in home as well as a health club in Yorktown Heights, NY. My web : www.functionallyfit.com

Hello. I practice acupuncture and various styles of massage therapy. I am a NYS licensed massage therapist and acupuncturist. I incorporate Deep Tissue Massage, Acupuncture/Oriental Medicine, as well as Trigger Point Therapy in order to facilitate myofascial release. This treatment has great results. I view the acupuncture meridians and the fascial system as interwoven. Fascia is a continuous network of connective tissue that extends without interruption from the top of the head to the tip of the toes. Fascia is considered bio-energetic and is a medium for transmission of electrical impulses and information throughout the body. Acupuncture meridians are also uninterrupted pathways through the body, which Qi (energy) flows. Many trigger points coincide with acupuncture points or are within the meridians and are located in areas where fascia converges. Acupuncture points mostly lie along the fascia planes between muscles or between a muscle and bone or tendon. Some theories suggest that the fascia and acupuncture meridians are the same and can be treated as a unique pair. Myofascial restrictions impede the flow of Qi (energy) and blood, which can cause pain. There is a saying that sums up the idea from a Western and Eastern philosophy, “Where there is no flow there is pain; Where there is flow there is no pain," - Nei Jing. Once you release the myofascial restrictions, break up the scar tissue, deactivate the trigger points and lengthen the muscles, the body can go back into balance, achieving proper muscle memory. All this equates to a pain-free body. You mentioned that you have chronic tightness in your neck and shoulders due to the nature of your work and that myofascial release works well for you. This hyperirritable spot (Myofascial Trigger Point) located within the taut band of muscle or fascia in your neck and shoulders can definitely be very painful. The trigger point can also cause referred pain or tenderness to another point on the body. For example, The trapezius muscle at the shoulder level can refer pain and tenderness along the upper back of the neck, behind the ear and side of the head temple, and then all the way to the temple. Compressing the trigger point is one way to assess what muscle or fascial group is problematic. My treatments can incorporate acupuncture followed by massage therapy. Trigger Point Acupuncture manipulates the muscular tightness (knots) and is used to release the hold of that particular muscle. This reduction of tightness allows the muscle to relax as well as the fascial pull to that area. Applying Deep Tissue Massage to the area to break up the adhesions in the muscles, followed by assisted stretches of the muscles to relieve the pulling at the attachment site, allows the muscles and fascia to relax even more and obtain freedom from pain. Many insurance companies cover massage and acupuncture, but I do offer discounted rates if your insurance does not cover this. I look forward to hearing from you.
