I'm planning to update my 25 year old condo townhouse. I have a contractor.  However, I'd like to know if there are interior designers that I could work with on a fee only/consultation basis. I need help in selecting kitchen countertops, lighting, flooring, paint colors and window treatments.  My renovation budget is $50K.

The Answer to your question is yes. Most Interior Designers work on either an hourly basis ( Consulting) and/or a Creative Fee based on the scope of the project. When interviewing Designers the client should be as specific as possible. For example; Does the client expect the designer to bring them all decorative ideas or does the client want to shop with designer and make decisions together or client may research decorative ideas themselves and want the designer to guide them and give there stamp of approval. Each scenario uses up a designers time in different ways. In addition, if a client has already selected a contractor. It is imperative that the designer you are thinking about meets contractor. All parties working for you must be on the same page and be in agreement as to the responsibilities of each party. For example, Which party will be purchasing materials. The designer may have a list of places to buy tile, granite etc. The contractor has a totally different list. The client must make sure that items are chosen and purchased at the same place. I can't tell you how many different names there are for the same tile at different stores. This simply confusion can cost the client money and time not to mention alot of finger pointing. Finally having a budget is very key. The client needs to allocate what portion of the budget is designated to the designer in relation to the project and purchasing of decorative items like the window treatments. designers normally take a percentage of the cost of goods that are purchased through them. The client should also be aware that under normal circumstances a 10% overage of budget can be expected to cover unexpected circumstances. For instance mold, old pipes, redesign of electrical to name a few.
