Question    posted to Kitchen & Bathroom Contractors on 10/14/07 09:20 AM, Dobbs Ferry, NY 10522
I ordered a granite kitchen countertop. They said I should have the old countertop off and the water and gas off and the sink removed as well as the cooktop when they would come to measure for the template. They said I could do it myself. It seems like too big a job. Any thoughts? Thanks

We do this all the time you have to disconnect all fixtures & counter top & then you have to check to see if there is support were is needed so when they install the new top every thing is ready. Good luck with your project.

They are correct, in order to make a true template the old counter top should be removed but do not destroy it so you can put back while the new one is being fabricated (ususally 2 weeks). Your present counter top ( if made of wood) should be screwed from below.
The gas valve is behind the stove and the water shut off valves are under the sink. Keep in mind the fact that you might be without a sink till the new counter top arrives
