I need a pair of eyeglasses for my son who is 6 years old.  They must be very flexible glasses that will not eaily break since he frequently forgets to take them off when he wrestles or when he does take them off, he leaves them on the floor or in other unsafe places.    Also, I would like to keep the total cost under $250.  Please let me know if you can help.

WE have 27 Frames in stock that are made of a Titanium and Nickel alloy which is often called a memory metal that should fit a six year old.  This alloy is made to forgive many of the abuses that a youngster dishes out.  They are priced at $127 to $170.

Regarding the lenses, most optical stores  would automatically put your child in a lens material called "polycarbonate" because of it's excellent break-resistance.  They always fail to point out to the parents that polycarbonate scratches the easiest of any material. (compact disks -CD are made of it)  It also has the poorest optical qualities. Regular CR-39 (scratch-resistant) plastic takes 14 times the impact that a tempered glass lens takes and is very scratch-resistant.  It is priced less, usually around $85. If you want the extra break-resistance then we recommend "Trivex" but it costs more.

Therefore: we should be able to provide the above mentioned frames with CR-39 lenses for between $212 and $255 for most Rx's.

When buying eyeglasses for children there are a few basic things to look for. The way a frame fits on a child is very important, the size and shape of the frame should conform to the shape of the child’s face. You always want to get a durable frame to withstand a child’s active lifestyle- a titanium frame or a frame with spring hinges are the best options. It is also important that the frame comes with a warranty of at least 1 year so that if there is an accident or defect in the frame the parent does not have to buy a new frame. The lenses that go into a child’s frame must be impact resistant either polycarbonate or trivex material. Eye Designs of Armonk has a great selection of children's eyewear and we have 20 years of experience fitting children. We take great pride in our customer service and Eye Designs has always been at the forefront in choosing great styles of eyeglasses for all our patients.
