Question    posted to Auto Mechanics on 09/19/07 02:55 PM, Pelham, NY 10803
my 2002 acura mdx has 85000 miles on it and is off warranty - i need to get a tune-up and just today 3 lights went on - check engine and vtm (which sometimes go on after I fill up) but also the maintenance light! I just don't want to get ripped off by Acura if I go back there or by anyone else, so, my question is twofold: what could those lights mean? How much should a tune-up cost? Thanks

Hello,

The maintenence light is pre-programmed to come on in certain intervals, and can be easily reset. Its not a big deal. AS for the the check engine light, We have a computer that can tell us the code that is making the light come on. We would charge you $25 to see what the code is, and tell you the steps we need to correct it. A tune up for this car should not be more than $400 dollars, parts and labor. You may not need to replace all the parts. The most expensive parts would be the spark plugs,  which if they are platinum are sometimes over $10 each. We can use other plugs, but I usually reccommend using the parts the car calls for.

I understand your concern for Acura charging too much. We are a family owned/operated business that has been in the community for over 30 years. If you have any questions contact Steve Jr. (914) 761-2323

Thank you!!!

Thank you for your enquiry.

Surgical Auto Repair do specialized in Acuras, we will be happy to look at your car and let you know what your problem is.  At 85000 miles your car should be visually looked at.  In order to let you know why those lights are on we would have to put our Acura Computer on and retrieve the codes that are stored in the car's computer.  We have been working on acuras for 15 years so you will get an accurate diagnosis.

Please call Sandra our service advisor at 914-665-3770, our hours are Monday - Friday 8am until 6pm.

Thank you

Dear MDX owner,

An engine tune up estimate would be to replace spark plugs, air filter and clean carbon from intake and throttle body. The fuel filter is in the fuel tank, and doesn't require replacement at this time. Labor time would be 1.1 hours at $84.73/hour. Parts cost is $176.80 (almost all is the cost of NGK platinum spark plugs). Total cost- around $270.00. The maintenance light came on because you reached a certain mileage on your odometer- it needs to be reset after service. We would have to scan the computer to find the cause of the check engine light, and the VTM light may be a consequense of the check engine light. It should be unrelated because it pertains to the drivetrain, which is computer controlled for all wheel drive (4WD). We are located in Sleepy Hollow, so you would have some distance to travel, but there is a train station nearby- Hudson Line.

Thank you,
Mickey Keegan
